Updated: Jan 3

A short escape doesn't require going overseas. Local trips can be both enjoyable and surprisingly convenient. We frequently focus on planning international holidays and miss the beautiful domestic destinations nearby.

While improvements are happening gradually, there is still a long way to go before travel returns to its pre-COVID pandemic state. Many countries have implemented strict travel restrictions to curb the spread of the coronavirus. It can be stressful to determine which countries are open for tourists and which require various documents for entry. Why endure the hassle of planning an extensive trip when you can enjoy beautiful local destinations just as much? There's no need to wait for quarantine to be lifted before hitting the road again. I assure you it will be a fantastic experience!

Traveling locally is easier than one might assume.

You have the option to visit the beach, explore a local trail, spend time at a nearby park, indulge in a shopping spree at an exciting location, or choose any local tourist spot you prefer. Vacations don't need to be long or costly; road trips can be incredibly enjoyable. You can travel alone, with a few friends, family members, or even colleagues. The goal is to get away from home, enjoy some fresh air, and take time to recharge. Furthermore, local travel is more affordable and less stressful—no need to worry about budget constraints or exposure to the virus. Instead, you can relish and discover local attractions until everything returns to normal.

We often underestimate the ability of the local tourism industry to satisfy our leisure travel needs, dismissing it in favor of far-off destinations that seem more appealing due to their exotic nature or the allure of the unknown. However, it is time that we change this mindset and start to appreciate the rich tapestry of experiences that await us right in our own backyards. Local destinations have so much to offer, often filled with hidden gems that can surprise and delight even the most seasoned traveler. From breathtaking natural landscapes to vibrant cultural experiences, local tourism can provide a fulfilling and enriching getaway without the need for extensive travel. Best of all, it only takes a few moments to sit back and explore all the magical places we have never seen before, perhaps even those we have overlooked in our rush to seek adventure elsewhere. Think about the charming trails that wind through nearby parks, the stunning views from local hills, or the serene beaches that provide a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. With just a bit of curiosity and an open mind, we can uncover experiences that rival those found in distant lands. Of course, as with any adventure, preparation is key. You must bring some money to indulge in local delicacies or unique crafts that catch your eye, some spare clothes suitable for various activities, and a bike for some bayside bike riding, which is a fantastic way to explore coastal areas while enjoying the fresh air and scenic views. Once you have gathered your essentials, you can then book a place to stay that suits your style, whether it’s a cozy bed and breakfast, a chic boutique hotel, or even a rustic cabin in the woods. As you plan your itinerary, consider selecting spots that pique your interest, whether it’s a trendy restaurant that boasts locally sourced ingredients, a quaint park perfect for a leisurely stroll or a picnic, or a cute shop offering handcrafted goods that reflect the character of the area. You name it—there are countless options waiting to be discovered, each offering a unique glimpse into the local culture and community. So, let the fun begin! Embrace the opportunity to connect with your surroundings, engage with local residents, and immerse yourself in experiences that can create lasting memories. By choosing to explore local tourism, we not only support our communities but also enrich our own lives with the diverse experiences that are often just a short drive or bike ride away.

I recently took a road trip lasting an hour and a half to Long Beach Island (LBI), New Jersey, which is about 100 miles from my home in New York City. I reserved a lovely beach house with some friends and family, where we spent a week enjoying fun and relaxation together.

While we were there, a power outage occurred because of thunderstorms, but it didn't bother us at all. Even with more than a day without electricity, we managed to have a great time. I had brought some homemade French brioche, which my friends adored. One of them used it to prepare French toast for breakfast, and it was absolutely amazing (just so you know, I can bake some fantastic bread).

The trip was exactly what we all needed as we discovered local restaurants, shops, and the renowned lighthouse. We rented bicycles and cycled around the town. We witnessed a stunning sandcastle contest on the beach, visited nearby family for a delightful home-cooked meal under the stars, and enjoyed a game of miniature golf at Jen's Links on LBI. It was my first experience playing golf, and I had a lot of fun. I’d even say I did pretty well. I’d love to do it again!

We concluded the week with a delightful walk by the ocean, capturing photos and creating wonderful memories. To finish, we enjoyed a delightful seafood meal at the Daymark restaurant, beautifully arranged in accordance with CDC guidelines to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, accompanied by live country and classical music. It was truly magical, simple, fun, and refreshing. I couldn't have wished for a better quick escape. This experience reminded me that we can still create beautiful memories in our own country, especially when international travel is limited.

If you're considering a brief local escape and are in search of ideas, I'm here to help with some suggestions. While I might not know your exact destination, I can draw from my experience to inspire you and offer some additional travel tips. Travel is all about creativity and adventure—so explore somewhere nearby, enjoy yourself, and create lasting memories. Often, the most memorable trips are those that aren't planned.

Welcome the journey, and remember to share your stories to motivate others. I would be delighted to hear from you.

Cheers
